Journal, Dec 1859-March 1861, kept while serving in Congress gives detailed daily account of occurrences in the House of Representatives during these tumultuous prewar years. Gives his opinions on speeches and the people giving them. Also frequent mention of his interest in the railroad. Discusses his family, wife and daughters in Washington and sons in the west, their social activities and the city of Washington, D.C. Journal, Nov. 1861-Oct. 1862, covers his first year in the war. Discusses daily camp life, skirmishes, and the major people he is in contact with. Documents related to the cotton speculation include: 1. summary of evidence by Col. N.P. Chipman and Chipman's statement to President Lincoln, 1863; 2. Curtis' statement to Lincoln, Nov. 1863; 3. Report of Judge Advocate General J. Holt; 4. statements from J.G. Forman, Jacob Brinkerhoff and Dr. D.L. McGugin; 5. general orders, letters, etc. used in the case.
